What a spectacular end to the year! Ever since I read your essay about searching for your first ruffed grouse, I think of you when I see one in Northern Wisconsin. I never seek them out, but I do seem to have a knack for startling them in the underbrush when I'm hiking!
I love it when people see a bird and think of me. Ruffed Grouse, and grouse in general, are excellent birds. Their range is so unique, and just barely dips into the west.
I’d never looked at the range map before, but it makes for an interesting shape! Nearly all of Wisconsin is in range, which explains why I run into them somewhat regularly when backpacking and doing trailwork.
